In this interview, Chantal Fontein talks about how she fulfils her role as management assistant, news writer for the Host Nation website and event organiser, all while bringing the skills she gained in the hospitality industry to her work at the Protocol and Host Country Affairs Department.

Meet Chantal Fontein as a management assistant, editor and event organiser

‘I work as management assistant to the Deputy Director of the Protocol and Host Country Affairs Department,’ Chantal begins. ‘My responsibilities vary from managing the deputy director’s diary and arranging official trips, to taking minutes at meetings and welcoming ambassadors to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I’m also in regular contact with embassies and international organisations, which makes it a very dynamic role.’

Sharing news with the world
In addition to her duties as management assistant, Chantal is also responsible – together with her colleague Maya Aumaj – for writing news articles for the Host Nation website. ‘We ensure that important developments are clearly communicated. This involves gathering information, conducting interviews and drafting articles. It’s rewarding to see how these articles contribute to the visibility of our diplomatic efforts,’ says Chantal.

From the hospitality industry to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Before joining the Protocol and Host Country Affairs Department, Chantal worked in the hospitality industry. ‘I studied hotel management and gained experience at the Van der Valk Hotel chain, working in the restaurant, at reception and then in marketing & communications,’ she says. ‘Now I get to use my hospitality and organisational skills in a completely different setting, which I really enjoy.’

Organising events and conferences
A key aspect of Chantal’s work is organising events and conferences. ‘Whether it’s a large international conference or a smaller thematic gathering, I love managing the whole event from start to finish. I work with my colleague Maya to take care of logistics like venue selection, catering, technical needs and the programme,’ Chantal explains. ‘On the day itself, we keep a close eye on everything so that we can resolve any issues that might arise. It gives me a real sense of accomplishment when an event or conference runs smoothly and attendees leave satisfied.’

Every day is different
When asked what a typical workday involves, Chantal laughs. ‘Every day is different, and that’s what I enjoy the most! One day, I might be arranging an official trip for the deputy director or welcoming an ambassador, while the next I’ll be out preparing for an international conference or conducting an interview for an article on our Host Nation website. The variety keeps it challenging for me,’ Chantal says.

Memorable experiences
One of the most remarkable moments in her career was preparing a lunch event for the Minister of Foreign Affairs. ‘I was responsible for preparing the venue, including the seating arrangements, placing flags, preparing the gift and welcoming the Minister. I did all of this close contact with my colleague, who was accompanying the other dignitaries on their way to the venue. As they were approaching, I was the one giving instructions to the security officers, the photographer and the Minister himself. For me it was fascinating to experience such an event from so close by.’

Spare time and travel
When asked what she does in her spare time, Chantal, who lives in The Hague with her boyfriend, says: ‘When I’m not working, I love spending time with family and friends. Traveling is also a big passion of mine. I enjoy exploring new places. Asia is my favourite destination. I would love to see as much of the world as possible!’
