Harman Idema

Dutch Consul General in Toronto
Harman Idema has been the Dutch Consul General in Toronto since 2021.

Before starting as Consul General in Toronto in 2021, Harman Idema served as the ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Chile during the last four years. During his extensive diplomatic career, he also served in Uganda, Guatemala and Colombia (at the last two postings as Deputy Ambassador/Counsellor).

From 2013 to 2017, Harman was the director of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague. He is specialized in bilateral relations, trade, strategy and public diplomacy.

He started his career at the ministry of Finance. He studied public policy at Twente University and spent two semesters at the University of California in Santa Barbara, USA. After high school, Harman was an exchange student for a year in Minnesota.

Harman is married to Marissa Maldonado and they have two children, Maya and Noa, who are both studying in the Netherlands.
