The embassy in Ottawa is looking for an intern for the period March 1, 2025 to July 31, 2025 The Dutch embassy in Ottawa (Canada) offers the opportunity to do an internship. Are you interested in how diplomacy works in practice? Then this is the internship you are looking for! As an intern, you will have the opportunity to get to know all aspects of the work of the embassy by shadowing staff members of the policy team and by supporting the work of the embassy.
 

Requirements

  • You are a motivated student and are following a university education;
  • You have preferably completed your bachelor's phase and you have not previously done an internship at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a representation thereof;
  • You have a demonstrable interest in/experience with international relations;
  • You have an affinity with international politics and preferably also knowledge of Canadian politics;
  • You have a feeling for analyzing political, economic and social developments;
  • You have a broad general knowledge;
  • You have a high level of command of Dutch and English and you can express yourself well orally and in writing - command of French is a plus;
  • You have a smooth pen and you are skilled in writing analytical messages;
  • You are representative and communicative and you can function well in a team;
  • Your core qualities are: independent, enterprising, creative, with an enthusiastic, results-oriented and enterprising attitude.

What we offer

 
The Dutch embassy in Ottawa offers an educational and versatile internship for non-graduate academics in the final phase of their WO master's degree. Interns are expected to conduct research on a topic to be determined in mutual consultation and to report on this during a presentation for the embassy staff. This research can be related to and part of their own studies, but this is not necessary. The internship also offers the opportunity to gain practical work experience in the field of public diplomacy, economics and international diplomacy. We expect an intern to work independently and we offer opportunities to develop yourself.
 
2025 is a special year. We are celebrating 80 years of liberation and will draw attention to the close ties between the Netherlands and Canada with a number of major public events, pay tribute to the Canadian veterans who liberated the Netherlands in WWII, and pay attention to the future of commemoration. The intern will contribute to and support these events.
 
Some of the tasks of our interns:
  • Contribute to political and economic reports;
  • Contribute to social media campaigns and online outreach initiatives;
  • Assist in planning, preparing and executing events;
  • Contribute to the preparations for incoming visits by delegations from the Netherlands;
  • Answer general questions from the Canadian public about the Netherlands;
  • Draft assessment memos for activities/events;
  • Follow and analyze political debates, developments and trends;
  • Represent the Embassy at events, conferences and diplomatic receptions
 

Assignment

 
During the internship you will work on a research paper. The topic can be: economic security, Canadian G7 Presidency (2025), the Canadian role in NATO or an element of Canadian human rights policy and the choice and exact content of this will be determined together before the start of the internship.
