Human rights - Canada
International Rule of Law and Human Rights
The Netherlands and Canada collaborate together and with like-minded partners and organizations in order to advance a number of mutual human rights and rule of law priorities, such as equal rights for women and minorities, media freedom, freedom of expression and belief, protecting human rights defenders, and countering gender-based violence.
The Netherlands embassy in Ottawa regularly organizes events and initiatives that bring together local activists, civil society organizations, and policymakers to engage, share experiences and best practices, and strategize effective approaches for advancing mutual human rights and rule of law priorities.
The Netherlands and Canada work closely together to uphold rules-based international order. Our countries have initiated multiple joint accountability efforts to prevent impunity for war crimes and human rights violations like torture. The embassy in Ottawa contributes to this work by bringing experts and stakeholders together.
Equal rights for LGBTI+ people
The Netherlands and Canada both stand unequivocally for equal rights for LGBTI+ persons worldwide. Together with like-minded countries around the world, Canada and the Netherlands support efforts by LBGTI+ organizations and activists in their tireless efforts to promote awareness and fight injustice. The Netherlands embassy in Ottawa regularly supports and participates in roundtables and information exchanges, and partners with local LGBTI+ organizations to coordinate events on such occasions as IDAHOBIT.
