The Magallanes Region in southern Chile is emerging as a global hotspot for renewable energy, thanks to its vast wind resources and growing green hydrogen industry. By harnessing these assets, the region has the potential not only to accelerate the global energy transition but also to stimulate local economic growth and create sustainable development opportunities. Pioneering green hydrogen companies such as HIF Global, HNH Energy, and TEG Chile are at the forefront of this transformation, setting the stage for a new era of clean energy innovation. In recognition of this, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Santiago de Chile organized a visit to the Magallanes Region last March as part of the PIB Chile program’s annual plan. The purpose was to deepen understanding of the region’s unique characteristics, observe the advancements in green hydrogen development, and engage with the local community, whose participation is crucial for the success of these initiatives.

Since 2021, the Netherlands has been a dedicated partner to Chile, working together to establish green hydrogen export-import corridors between Chile and Europe and facilitating the exchange of expertise. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) plays a key role in this collaboration, supporting a cluster of eight Dutch companies as part of the "Green Energy Corridor" initiative. These companies—Port of Rotterdam, Gasunie, North Sea Port, Proton Ventures, Port Consultants Rotterdam, SoluForce, Vopak, and Arcadis—are combining their knowledge and resources to build a sustainable and efficient energy trade network. This joint effort is underpinned by the Netherlands’ innovative ‘quadruple helix’ approach to problem-solving, which brings together government bodies, knowledge institutions, businesses, and society. By fostering collaboration among these diverse stakeholders, this strategy not only addresses global challenges but also lays the foundation for co-creating innovative solutions and sustainable business practices. The shared vision extends beyond technology and trade—it aims to empower nations, enhance societal well-being, and pave the way for a resilient energy future. Through this dynamic partnership, both Chile and the Netherlands are demonstrating how international cooperation can act as a catalyst for transformative change on a global scale.
