Sustainable embassy news
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands works to create a just and sustainable world. We do this by converting sustainability policy into concrete actions in our own organization. As an organization within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy in Santiago de Chile walks the talk! We aim to achieve impact in climate change, circular economy and supply chain responsibility.
We would like to share more about our latest initiatives on circular economy. At the Embassy, we have done an analysis of our waste flows and received specialized advice on waste prevention and sustainable waste processing. It has been already a year since we have started to put more attention into generating less waste and, when not possible, separating the waste so that it can be re-cycled.
We do waste separation for organics and inorganic products, which includes plastics, tetra pack, glass bottles, metals, batteries, cardboard and paper. We also measure our carbon footprint reduction, and learn that the benefits can be compared to having less cars circulating on the streets and less light bulbs turned-on.
The demonstration effect of the waste separation has been powerful within the team. At lunch time our kitchen includes dialogues on which food provider serves their salads in compostable packs, and we keep on looking for the perfect provider! And we also try to avoid generating waste by bringing prepared dishes in reusable packages, we bring our bottles to recharge them with drinking water, and are always open for innovative ideas.
When it comes to sustainability, at the Embassy we walk the talk!
