Welcome to two new colleagues at the embassy!
At the Embassy, we are delighted to welcome two talented professionals: Susana López, consular officer, and Ramsil Márquez, administrative assistant. Our commercial and cultural advisor, Lieselotte De Ly, sat down with them to talk about their first weeks working with us.
Susana López: Experience and passion for consular service
Spanish-Dutch national Susana brings extensive experience to the consular field. She has lived in various countries, including Spain, Bolivia, Paraguay, and spent 24 years in the Netherlands. With a solid career background, Susana previously worked at the Consulate of Chile in Amsterdam—a role that now proves invaluable for assisting both Dutch and Chilean citizens with passport and visa requests. Since August last year, she has been residing in Santiago, Chile, where she loves walking her spirited dog Milana ("Mila"), who is one year and four months old.
On her first weeks at the embassy's consular section: "Working at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Chile is a privilege for me. The Netherlands holds a special place in my life; it's filled with nostalgia and feels like a dream come true. Although the basis of consular work is similar, the execution differs greatly between the Chilean Consulate in Amsterdam and the Embassy here in Chile. I'm still processing all the new information I need to learn and manage in such a short time."
What draws her to consular work: "I love interacting with the public. Every individual is unique, and I truly enjoy this level of engagement. Perhaps that's why I'm combining my career in social work with my second year of a psychology degree. Both fields greatly enhance my professional work."
What has stood out to her: "Despite the short time I've been here, I've noticed the care that the employer takes with their employees. They organize group activities, which makes a big difference."
Ramsil Márquez: A versatile professional with a dynamic spirit
A graduate in Interpretation from the University of Los Andes in Mérida, Venezuela, Ramsil has always been driven by a passion for learning and teaching cultures and languages. She speaks English, Spanish, and Italian fluently, having perfected Italian during her time in the region of Umbria, Italy. Living in Chile for the past eight years, Ramsil has worked in customer service at Santiago's Arturo Benitez Airport and in the real estate sector, where she honed processes to optimize workflows and manage responsibilities efficiently. A devoted teacher of languages, Ramsil is also a mother to a 4-year-old boy and an avid lover of outdoor activities. From running half-marathons to organizing picnics or exploring the hills of Santiago, she cherishes connecting with nature.
On her first weeks at the embassy: "From the beginning, I've felt the distinct concept of this embassy. The way of working here is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. I appreciate how responsibilities are communicated clearly without constant monitoring. It's an environment where one person's challenge becomes everyone's challenge, with plenty of people willing to help and collaborate. It's truly wonderful."
What attracted her to the role: "I always consider what I can contribute, but also what I can learn. I feel confident that I have the necessary skills for the role as a management assistant, and I am also fascinated by learning about diplomatic work firsthand. A personal challenge for 2025 is to start learning Dutch. I've heard it’s quite difficult, but I love challenges."
What has stood out to her:
"Cultural differences are undeniably interesting. For
example, at the embassy, the birthday person has to bring their own
cake and serve their colleagues. This custom is very different from
the birthday traditions I know, but it's also wonderful to discover
these new practices."
