The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in collaboration with the Universidad Católica Santo Domingo (UCSD) and the Instituto Nacional de Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre (INTRANT), held a conference entitled “Cycling for a More Sustainable Future: Analysis of the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic” at the UCSD Octagonal Hall. The event attracted university students and professionals interested in sustainable mobility.

The conference aimed to highlight the importance of cycling as a viable alternative for urban mobility and its positive impact on reducing the carbon footprint, both in the Dominican Republic and in the Netherlands, a nation recognized worldwide for its cycling culture.

“In the Netherlands, cycling is not only a means of transportation, but an integral part of our daily lives. We believe that cycling can play a crucial role in creating more sustainable and healthy cities, and we are excited to share our experience with the Dominican Republic,” said H.E. Frank Keurhorst, Ambassador of the Netherlands to the Dominican Republic.

The event was also attended by representatives of INTRANT, who presented the progress of the “Manual de Cicloinfraestructura” in the Dominican Republic. This document is fundamental for the development of a safe and efficient infrastructure for cyclists in the country.

In addition, José Paliza, an expert in sustainable mobility, offered a comparative view between cycling infrastructure in the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic. “Sustainable mobility is not only an environmental necessity, but an opportunity to improve the quality of life in our cities. Cycling is an accessible and efficient solution that can transform our streets and communities,” said the expert.

The conference concluded with a question and answer session, allowing attendees to interact directly with the speakers and further explore the opportunities offered by urban cycling. In addition, attendees were invited to participate in the Bicicletada Naranja 2024, a guided tour of the Colonial Zone, to highlight the importance of sustainable transportation alternatives.
