For a Future Without Violence: Conference and Expert Panel organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands

The Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) was the venue for a day commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The event, organized in collaboration with the School of Communication of the Santo Domingo Campus of the PUCMM, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Minervas Films and the Research Center for Women's Action (CIPAF), brought together experts and the public interested in the fight to eradicate gender violence and promote equality.


 

 

During the activity, an episode of Minervas Films' Feminismo 101 series was screened, which explored the different manifestations of male violence, as well as tools to empower young women. This was followed by a panel of experts who reflected on the role of the media as a key tool for the prevention of gender-based violence.


For her part, the Minister Counselor of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Leonne Van Vlimmeren, stressed the importance of collaboration between nations and institutions: “The fight against gender-based violence is a global challenge that requires the joint effort of all sectors. From our embassy, we reaffirm our commitment to support initiatives that contribute to guarantee the rights of women and girls in the Dominican Republic and around the world”.


The panel included the participation of prominent specialists: Riamny Méndez, journalist and researcher, author of a comprehensive report on gender violence in the Dominican Republic; Natanael Disla, consultant specializing in gender and human rights; Ramón Stalin Montero Santiago, communicologist and analyst in gender and masculinities; Alexandra Santana, producer of Minervas Films, dedicated to the promotion of the female gaze and participation in the film industry, and the director of the School of Communication of the PUCMM, Dr. Ana Bélgica Gúichardo as moderator.

The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on current challenges and opportunities to transform media narratives towards an approach that promotes gender equality. The audience, composed of students, academics, journalists and activists, participated actively, reaffirming the relevance of continuing to generate spaces for dialogue and action.
