What we do - Ghana
What do we do?
Management
As of Tuesday 7th September, 2021, H.E. Mr. Jeroen Verhuel, assumed office as Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Ghana.
Ms Wendy van Meel is the Deputy Head of Mission as well as Head of the Development Cooperation and the Trade and Economic Cluster.
Trade and Economy
The Netherlands and Ghana have close commercial relations. The Netherlands is one of the top five importers from Ghana, among others due to the significant import of cocoa. In 2019, in line with the ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ agenda, the Netherlands started working towards a new, equal and mutually beneficial way that supports Ghana’s ambition to move beyond aid, attract investment, and deepen trade relations. In that light the embassy is currently implementing a combined approach that focuses on the horticulture and cocoa value chains. Within that approach, the team encourages Dutch businesses to invest in Ghana, aims to enhance private sector development by creating employment opportunities especially for youth and women, and encourages innovative and climate-smart solutions in the horticultural and cocoa sector.
Before starting a business in Ghana, it is important to prepare well. Companies that are planning to explore the Ghanaian market can consult the Doing Business Factsheet. They can also go to the website of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). Moreover, they are invited to enquire further information from the Embassy. Also, the Embassy works closely together with the Ghana Netherlands Business and Culture Council (GNBCC). For more information please visit their website at www.gnbcc.net. GNBCC provides companies with useful information and is a good network for sharing information.
Initiatives like Impact Clusters, DHI-subsidies, and Dutch Good Growth Fund are important catalysers for trade and development. More information on these programmes can be found on this website and Netherlands Enterprise Agency | RVO.nl.

Politics and Security
The Netherlands Embassy closely follows political developments and the security situation in the country. In a region where democracy is eroding it’s important to support Ghana in the field of governance and human rights. Increasing instability and particularly the rise of violent extremism in the Sahel is posing a threat to Ghana. As an embassy, we monitor these risks and look for opportunities to address root causes and drivers of extremism.
Press and Cultural Affairs
The Republic of Ghana and the Kingdom of the Netherlands share a long history of which tangible and intangible evidence remains. The shared cultural heritage of the two countries is an integral part of the prevailing bilateral relations. It is a reminder of the shared history of the two countries and of that in the field of cultural heritage in particular. With regards to this shared history, the embassy looks for opportunities to boost cultural exchange, social inclusion and societal challenges.
