Agriculture, food and nature

Hungary and the Netherlands both have a long-standing tradition in agriculture, and both produce more food than they consume. This means that both countries can play an important role in ensuring Europe’s food security. On the other hand, both countries are vulnerable to the ravages of the changed climate.

In the past years, farmers in Hungary faced droughts, hot summers, spring frosts. The Netherlands also faces these environmental challenges which means that the two countries can share their experience and best practices in dealing with issues like food safety, competitiveness, biodiversity loss, soil degradation and more.

Not only do the two countries share similar struggles, they also have similar approaches, as both Hungary, and the Netherlands, place an emphasis on research and education, aiming to make agriculture more knowledge-based, and looking for ways to integrate both generational experience, as well as new breakthrough in science in their agricultural policy.

The Dutch Embassy in Budapest has a unique agricultural office, which not only facilitates trade relations between the two countries, but also actively seeks opportunities for knowledge exchange and cross-border experience sharing between farmers.
