On 27 February 2025, a solemn ceremony was held at the Ereveld Kembang Kuning war cemetery in Surabaya, East Java, to commemorate the Battle of the Java Sea, which took place 83 years ago. The event was attended by approximately 120 people, including family members of war victims, students from Universitas Airlangga and Universitas 17 August 1945, and official representatives from Indonesia’s Navy, the Governor of East Java, the Mayor of Surabaya, as well as diplomats from the United Kingdom and Australia. The ceremony included a wreath-laying tribute, honoring those who lost their lives during the battle.

During his speech, Netherlands Deputy Defence Attaché, Commander Patrick Stähli, highlighted the importance of remembering the sacrifices made during the battle. "We should not simply take peace and freedom for granted. We have to fight for it, every day. With education, communication, diplomacy, and having capable defense forces. All with the goal of not having to go to battle again and thus preventing new generations from becoming traumatized and losing loved ones, like what happened 83 years ago as a result of the Battle of the Java Sea," he stated.
