About the Amsterdam School

What happens when culture crosses the ocean? The exhibition revolves around this question, showing how the expressive architecture movement of the Amsterdam School (c. 1910-1935) has been shaped by Indonesian arts and culture. A special focus in the exhibition is on the life and work of the Semarang-born architect Liem Bwan Tjie, who studied in the Netherlands and worked for Michel de Klerk, one of the lead architects of the Amsterdam School.

The exhibition displays objects, drawings and photos showcasing the merging worlds in architecture and design that connects the Netherlands and Indonesia. This includes furniture designed by Liem Bwan Tjie from the office of the Oei Tiong Ham Concern in Semarang (on display for the first time with the courtesy of Rajawali Nusantara) and an installation by graphic artist Yasmin Tri Aryani about the significance of Liem Bwan Tjie’s work today. The exhibition is accompanied by a public program involving local partners, including Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia, Ganara Art and Jakarta Good Guide. Part of the program is under the umbrella of Arus Balik - Shifting Currents, a collaboration between Nieuwe Instituut, Museum Het Schip and Gudskul.
