Legal capital of the world

The Hague is known as the legal capital of the world. The Peace Palace is a symbol of this role.
Some 160 international organisations have offices in and around The Hague, including:

The Security and Rule of Law portfolio of the Netherlands Embassy in Kenya

Political, social and economic stability are necessary conditions for the development of a vibrant economic relationship between Kenya and the Netherlands, and for effective implementation of the development cooperation program. For this reason, the Security and Rule of Law program seeks to contribute to the aid and trade agenda of the Netherlands by addressing some of the causes and triggers of instability in Kenya through partnership with public sector institutions, independent state agencies and civil society organizations. The program focuses on enhancing access to inclusive justice, sustaining the push for accountability in order to break cycles of impunity for corruption and human rights violations, promoting effective implementation of the Constitution and citizen engagement, in order to foster good governance and democracy. The Embassy also continues to have a strong focus on gender equality and support for initiatives that promote increased women’s empowerment including participation in governance and leadership.

The Embassy aims to:

  1. Promote inclusive access to justice with a focus on the vulnerable and marginalized;
  2. Sustain  justice sector reforms through institutional strengthening of the Judiciary;
  3. Break the cycle of impunity for human rights violations and corruption;
  4. Strengthen civil society organizations as  watchdogs on the implementation of the constitution,  catalysts of political dialogue and partners in development;
  5. Support free and fair elections through civic education and empowerment of women to vie for elective positions;
  6. Strengthen the protection of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) in Kenya.
