Building Stronger Ties: Netherlands Embassy and Nakuru County Forge New Path for Collaborative Growth

On September 18, 2024, Ambassador Henk Jan Bakker met with Susan Kihika, Governor of Nakuru County, to explore key areas for strategic collaboration between Nakuru and the Netherlands. This bilateral meeting focused on Nakuru’s economic priorities and the potential for deeper cooperation across various sectors, including agriculture, health, water, energy, and logistics. Nakuru’s significance in the Kenya-Netherlands relationship is underscored by its hosting of Dutch flower companies and its role in numerous development programs.

The Netherlands praised the leadership of Governor Kihika and the G7 Women Governors for their efforts in promoting gender inclusion and empowering women in leadership and socio-economic development. Ambassador Bakker reaffirmed the Embassy's commitment to supporting gender equality and women’s participation in governance.

In addition, Myrko Webers, Program Manager at VEI, presented the organization's impactful work in water, sanitation, and hygiene. Through collaborations with local partners and utilities, VEI is addressing pressing issues like climate change, sewage management, non-revenue water, and water conservation in Nakuru. This meeting highlighted the Netherlands' continued support for sustainable development and its role in fostering long-term partnerships with Nakuru County.
