Kenya and the Netherlands have a strong development and economic relationship. In the current Multi Annual Country Strategy 2023 - 2026 Kenya, Life Sciences and Health has been identified a top sector to strengthen further collaborations and partnerships in the coming years. To realize this, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya has adopted the Combi Approach, which integrates trade, investments and development cooperation as a platform that aims to advance Universal Health Coverage by enhancing access, quality, financing, and responsiveness within the Kenya healthcare system. This approach fosters a mutually beneficial partnership that not only supports Kenya’s health sector but also opens doors for Dutch innovation and expertise to contribute to solutions.

During the week of 22nd July, several pivotal meetings were held to co-create and implement the strategy for enhancing healthcare collaboration between Kenya and the Netherlands, laying a strong foundation for future partnerships. Task Force Health Care (TFHC), the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), Africa Health Business, Open Phence, Amref Health Africa, PharmAccess, and other key local stakeholders are leading this initiative, which focuses on supporting Kenya's Universal Health Coverage (UHC) ambitions. Initial efforts are concentrated on Kisumu and Homa Bay Counties, with primary areas of focus including eHealth, primary healthcare, and sustainability—critical components that align with the healthcare goals of both nations.

We received a wealth of positive feedback during these engagements, which will be instrumental in guiding the implementation phase of the strategy. As we look ahead, an economic mission on health  from the Netherlands is scheduled to visit Kenya from October 14-18, 2024. Between 16 and 17 October will also be the inaugural Lake Region Digital Health Conference 2024  which also sets stage towards digital and technology inclusive agenda.  This mission will further solidify the partnership,  learn more about their opportunities and challenges in the Kenyan market as well as ensuring joint collaborative efforts are effectively aligned with Kenya’s healthcare priorities.

The discussions and planning during this period have set the stage for a stronger, more impactful Netherlands-Kenya partnership in healthcare, with a shared vision of advancing Universal Health Coverage and addressing critical health challenges in Kenya.

Stay tuned for more updates as we move forward with this important collaboration.
