For our Lithuanian friends, 6th of July is not just another public holiday. Every year, this day invites to re-evaluate the historical choices made by King Mindaugas, the first ruler of the Lithuanian state, when Lithuania declared itself loud and clear to the world. Once begun, this historic journey brought Lithuanians a long tradition of statehood. Even in the face of the greatest difficulties, they did not lose the will to seek independence. They found in themselves the determination to build their own state and the courage to defend it.
Therefore, on this exact day, citizens of Lithuania and foreign countries are awarded state orders and medals every year for their services to the Republic of Lithuania and for making its name known in the world. For striving to preserve freedom and independence as the basis for lasting prosperity, for serving their professional vocation and human ideals to strengthen the order of not only their individual communities and countries, but also the world.
“By means of state awards we pay tribute to Lithuania's loyal friends from abroad who strengthen the security of Lithuania and the region, international cooperation, and contribute to the dissemination of the Lithuanian language, history, and culture” – said the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda when he awarded General Onno Eichelsheim, Commander of the Netherlands Armed Forces with the Commander's Cross of the Order "For Merits to Lithuania". For his outstanding contribution to the strengthening of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, his significant contribution to the development of the defense partnership between Lithuania and the Netherlands and international military cooperation.
