The Launch of the Dissident Walking Tour - Lithuania
The Launch of the Dissident Walking Tour
Together with the Andrei Sakharov Research Centre for Democratic Development, we launched the Dissident Tour of Vilnius at a reception hosted by the ambassador on the 8th of May.
This project, led by the director of the Sakharov Center Robert van Voren and Project Manager Neringa Gališanskytė, resulted in an independent walking tour through Vilnius which takes its participants back to the time when dissidents were resisting Soviet occupation in Vilnius.
After the introduction of the tour by Professor van Voren and a short speech on the tour’s historical significance by signatory to the Lithuanian declaration of independence in 1990 and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas, the ambassador Jack Twiss Quarles van Ufford and his guests were able to experience the Dissident Tour on phones during the event. This preview was enjoyed by many of our guests and kicked off the Center’s intention to help revive the historical memory of Lithuania’s unspoken heroes of peaceful resistance among the public.
Currently those in Vilnius will also be able to spot the billboard campaign by the Sakharov Center, scan the QR-code, and discover the underground secrets of Vilnius!
