Ambassador for International Organisations (AMIO) - NL Host Nation
Paul van den IJssel, Ambassador for International Organisations
The Ambassador for International Organisations (AMIO) maintains relations with 38 intergovernmental organisations based in the Netherlands. The AMIO represents the Netherlands as host country to these international organisations. This applies equally to organisations already based here and those considering the Netherlands as a location for their headquarters.
The Netherlands attaches great importance to creating a favourable climate for international organisations. The presence of international organisations in the fields of peace and justice helps promote the international legal order, as laid down in article 90 of the Dutch constitution. This presence also strengthens the Netherlands’ positive international reputation, with The Hague as the iconic city of peace, justice and security.
The Netherlands is especially interested in hosting 1) international organisations in the field of peace, justice and security, 2) international organisations in areas relating to the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA) top sectors and 3) international organisations whose mandate aligns with international organisations already based in the Netherlands.
The AMIO coordinates cooperation between central government bodies, implementing organisations and municipalities on matters relating to host country affairs, policy on attracting international organisations, and regulations that affect intergovernmental organisations.
