Defence - Norway
The defence attaché office in Oslo also follows the latest developments about multifaceted cooperation with Norway within other international fora such as the Northern Group, the European Intervention Initiative (EI2) and the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) and of course the developments within the Northern Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO).
In addition, the attaché office supports Dutch companies with their contacts in the security sector in Norway and Iceland.
During (high level) visits to military activities, we brief and guide the Dutch visitors and we support military personnel posted to Norway or conducting exercises and/or training in Norway.
The scope of the Norwegian-Netherlands cooperation includes:
- Joint activities in the fields of military training and exercises (e.g. Arctic and Mountain training);
- sharing knowledge and experience gained in the field of military missions and operations;
- cooperation in the field of research, development, logistical support and procurement of defence equipment;
- sharing knowledge in the field of defence technology;
- exchanging personnel including students at our respective military staff colleges and staff officers in our respective headquarters.
The defence attaché office for the Nordic countries is located within the Netherlands embassy in Oslo where, apart from giving the necessary attention to the military cooperation in Norway and Iceland, we also tend to the military cooperation with Denmark, Finland and Sweden.
Iceland
Iceland has no Armed Forces, but is a founding member of NATO and occupies a strategic position in the North-Atlantic. The Netherlands has a history of close cooperation with Iceland with Maritime Patrol aircraft operating permanently from Keflavik during the cold war.
The defence office at the Dutch embassy sustains the existing cooperation with Iceland, with regard to NATO defence cooperation and to strengthen bilateral relations.
We follow the latest developments on Iceland, like the participation in the Northern Group and the joining of Iceland to the JEF in 2021. When the Netherlands participate with military personnel in exercises on Iceland (e.g. Exercise Northern Challenge), we will support them.
