Item 2 – Interactive Dialogue with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
Statement of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, delivered by H.E. Ambassador Lars Tummers, Deputy Permanent Representative, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations in Geneva
Mr. President,
The Kingdom of the Netherlands aligns itself with the EU statement and thanks the High Commissioner for his global update.
Regarding the situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, we refer to our statement delivered during the respective Interactive Dialogue with the High Commissioner.
Mr. President,
We are deeply concerned about the deportation of a group of Uyghur refugees by Thailand to China last week, in disregard of the non-refoulement principle. UN experts concluded that they are at real risk of torture or other punishment upon return. We call on China to guarantee their rights.
The systematic oppression of Afghan women and girls has long reached an alarming level. The future of Afghan society looks bleak when women and girls continue to be erased from public life. No steps towards normalization should be taken without significant improvement of their situation. We continue to urge Afghanistan to adhere to international human rights law, including CEDAW, and adhere utmost importance to accountability for any violations.
The state of civic space in Venezuela continues to be a source of serious concern, particularly with the recent adoption of the NGO law, which impacts freedom of association and the right to engage in public affairs. Critical or dissenting voices run a constant risk of persecution by the authorities. The Kingdom of the Netherlands calls on Venezuela to unconditionally release those arbitrarily detained and to uphold the human rights of all Venezuelans, particularly activists, journalists, human rights defenders and members of the opposition.
Lastly,
In Syria there are signs of hope. We are grateful to see a real opportunity for a more peaceful and inclusive Syrian society. A society in which justice and accountability is served, and where people can finally rebuild their country in peace. A country with a vibrant civil society, based on a functioning rule of law and human rights protection and promotion.
I thank you.
