Statement of the Kingdom of the Netherlands delivered by H.E. Mr. Lars Tummers, Deputy Permanent Representative, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UN in Geneva

Mr. President,

The Kingdom of the Netherlands aligns itself with the EU statement and expresses its sincere appreciation to all speakers. The human rights situation in Afghanistan is alarming. We strongly condemn the Taliban’s systematic and continuously increasing oppression of human rights in Afghanistan. The recently published “vice and virtue” law is another glaring example. Of particular concern are the systematic exclusion of women and girls from public life and education, as well as the targeting of minorities, independent media and human rights defenders.

There can be no steps towards normalization without improvements on the human rights situation. We continue to urge the de facto authorities to adhere to international human rights law, including the treaties to which Afghanistan is a state party.

The work of the Special Rapporteur is crucial in shedding light on these violations and advocating for the protection of human rights in Afghanistan. It is important that the Special Rapporteur’s mandate is extended to ensure continued monitoring and reporting on the human rights situation, and to ultimately strengthen accountability efforts. In the same vein, we welcome the High Commissioner’s stocktaking report on accountability options.

Mr. Bennett, given the persistent reports of human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and systematic oppression, what measures can be taken to ensure accountability? What can we do to support your efforts to document human rights violations?

Thank you.
