Myanmar - Interactive Dialogue with the High Commissioner
Statement of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, delivered by Lieke Brand, Second Secretary, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
Thank you, President,
The Kingdom of the Netherlands aligns itself with the EU
statement.
This month marks 4 years since the military coup in
Myanmar. Since then, the people of Myanmar have been subject to
horrific violence and repression. The Netherlands is alarmed by the
continuous worsening of the conflict. Humanitarian needs have risen
tremendously and the conflict fuels hunger, leaving millions at the
risk of starvation. We commend the people of Myanmar who display
unwavering resilience, and we stand with them in their fight for
democracy, human rights and accountability.
The Netherlands calls for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2669 and underlines the importance of accountability. Perpetrators of human rights violations, including sexual and gender based violence, must be held accountable and brought to justice. Accountability must be part of the sustainable solution for Myanmar.
High Commissioner,
What more can be done to achieve accountability for the
perpetrators of atrocities in Myanmar, and in particular, how can we
ensure that the voices of local civil society groups are heard in this
process?
