Human rights and equality - Slovakia
LGBTIQ+
On April 1st 2001, the Netherlands became the first country to acknowledge same-sex marriages. The Netherlands continues to stand strong in supporting equal rights for LGBTIQ+.
The Embassy has been therefore supporting organisations that try to achieve wider social acceptance of LGBTIQ+ people in Slovakia and that fight discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
Violence against women
Globally, more than 1 in 3 women experiences gender-based violence during their lifetime. Because of this, The Netherlands prioritises the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against all women and girls.
Every year in Slovakia, the Embassy participates in the global ‘Orange the World’- Campaign to ask for more attention and concrete action on this issue. #ZastavmeNasilie
Minorities
One of many examples is the Omama project which on one hand empowers Roma women but mainly also seeks to reduce developmental barriers for children from settlements.
Moreover, the Embassy supports the annual Roma Spirit Awards which aim at creating a public platform for the presentation of positive real-life benefits of integration of Roma minority into society, as well as award the work of those who work for the Roma community in Slovakia.
