Tradition of planting tulips in Slovak cities continues

The tradition began in 2018, on the occasion of celebrating 25 years of bilateral relations between the Netherlands and Slovakia. A special variety “Slovensko” was created and baptized by President Kiska.

Since then, thousands of the special tulips were donated to towns, cities and organisations all over Slovakia, to celebrate the good relations between our countries and to highlight the efforts and commitment to sustainability, equality and inclusion.

In 2023, the Embassy donated orange tulip bulbs to more than 20 schools around Slovakia as part of the annual Orange the world campaign. Tulip plantings in schools were connected to workshops on recognising and fighting gender based violence.

Orange is at the same time the color of the Netherlands, referring to the royal "House of Orange-Nassau".

In 2024, we continue the tradition of planting the tulips in Slovak towns and we are already looking forward to seeing them blossom all over Slovakia in spring.
