Ukraine Vision 2024: Documenting for Justice

News item | 05-02-2024 | 14:05

In an increasingly uncertain world, it is important to raise awareness of our rule-based system, and support those fighting for democracy, justice and human rights.

Ukraine Vision 2024 served as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing by Ukraine and preserving its cultural heritage as it faces the challenges of war.

Our embassy was proud to play an active role in this year’s program. The panel discussion “Conflict through the Lens” featured Dutch acclaimed war photographer Eddy van Wessel, who shared about his work at the frontlines in Ukraine.

The Netherlands also supported the screening of the documentary Iron Butterflies about the downing of flight MH17, which resulted in the loss of 298 lives, and the Russian disinformation campaign that followed.

Both photography and film have a unique power to show the harsh realities of war. These visuals can moreover act as proof of the crimes committed, challenging false narratives. Therefore, they do not just document what happens but can also help promote truth, call for justice and accountability, and raise awareness. The documentary Iron Butterflies reminds us of the importance of democratic values—like rule of law, an independent justice system, and the free media. It highlights the need to hold Russia responsible for the atrocities it has committed, both before and during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The festival concluded with a reception at the ambassador’s residence. We hope to continue strengthening the ties between the Netherlands, Ukraine, and Sweden in our collective commitment to justice, democracy, and a united Europe.

Ukraine Vision 2024 is an initiative that fosters cultural exchange between Ukraine and Europe. Through discussions, film screenings, and artistic contributions, this platform seeks to raise awareness about Ukraine’s efforts to safeguard its cultural legacy while navigating the realities of war. It also offers a space to engage in meaningful dialogue about the country’s struggle for sovereignty and democracy.
