Knowledge Exchange on Urban Cycling - Sweden
Knowledge Exchange on Urban Cycling
The Netherlands is considered a cycling paradise, while Sweden leads in public transport. At democratic festival Frihamnsdagarna in Gothenburg, we explored what we can learn from each other to create sustainable and resilient cities.
Knowledge Exchange on Urban Cycling
In collaboration with the Dutch Cycling Embassy (DCE) and the City of Gothenburg, we hosted a breakfast dialogue focused on integrating active modes of transport - cycling and walking - and public transport in urban planning. Participants shared insights and practical examples from both the Swedish and Dutch experiences, sparking fruitful round-table discussions. The session ended with a panel that mapped out potential next steps.
The event attracted a diverse group of field representatives, including representatives from municipalities, consultancies, and enterprises. One key takeaway was the value of (data-driven) best practices in accelerating the implementation of cycling policy. Detailed examples from cities with similar structures, such as Rotterdam and Gothenburg, were highlighted as especially useful. Cities would benefit from actively exchanging knowledge on their shared goals. For a detailed reflection of the visit, see this article on the website of the DCE.
Our embassy has had a long term focus on strengthening cooperation between Sweden and the Netherlands in creating more sustainable and resilient cities. With our trade & innovation and (regional) business development team, we continue to provide opportunities for stakeholders from both countries to connect and collaborate. Seeing key players interact and inspire each other at Frihamnsdagarna was very rewarding.
