Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands honoured King’s Day with earthquake victims in Kahramanmaraş

In solidarity with victims of the earthquakes, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands decided to honour its national day, Kingsday (April 27), in Kahramanmaraş, with the opening of the Tulip Education & Recreation Centre.

With the financial support of eleven companies who contributed generously, and in close cooperation with Onikişubat Municipality and the EXPO organisation, the Embassy established the Tulip Education & Recreation Centre within the Kahramanmaraş EXPO area. This Centre will provide the children and women living around the EXPO area with a (child) friendly environment to have a moment of rest and to assist youngsters who have fallen behind in their education.

The Dutch national day in Kahramanmaraş started with the children theatre performance ‘Jip and Janneke – Shall We Play Together?’ by Sema Citfci Children Theatre Company. All the children also received a backpack with books and stationary. Ambassador Wijnands spoke with victims to hear their stories and joined them for lunch, accompanied by Mr. Hanefi Mahçiçek, Mayor of Onikişubat Municipality.

The programme continued at the EXPO Hall with speeches by the Ambassador, Mayor Mahçiçek and Mr. Steven van Rijswijk, ING Group CEO, the main sponsor of the Centre. By cutting the ribbon the Centre was officially opened.

Together with Mr. Mustafa Yegen, Deputy Director General of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), the Ambassador also handed over new music instruments to students from Kahramanmaraş who lost their instruments during the earthquakes. The new instruments were provided by the IKSV Instrument Support Fund with financial contribution of the Embassy.
