This means that the Netherlands contributes to the warranty of natural and cultural heritage sites, which are of universal importance to the history of human kind. The Netherlands can also nominate new sites for UNESCO’s World Heritage List. There are currently nine Dutch sites on this list; follow this link to find out which sites these are.
For more information, see Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
The UNESCO convention on Prohibiting Illicit Trade in Cultural Property of 1970 has been signed by the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2009. This convention has as a purpose to prevent illicit import, export and transfer of ownership of cultural property. Cultural goods that are of importance to a national culture cannot just be exported without any consequences. Countries that signed the convention are enabled by UNESCO to reclaim illicitly transported cultural goods from one another.
