Executive Chef, Washington, D.C.

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is looking for a full-time Executive Chef. The Ambassador invites and entertains official delegations, VIP guests and many other visitors to the residence. The Chef is a keyplayer in ensuring our high-level hospitality and should be highly skilled in creating and preparing excellent, sustainable food for events at our Ambassador’s residence.

The Chef also manages the inventory, additional staff, orders supply and ensures compliance with health and safety regulations while overseeing a high standard quality.

Tasks and duties

  • Create the menu, prepare, and cook the food for different types of events.
  • Cook vegetarian and pescatarian for the Ambassador and spouse, and occasional house guests including visiting family members.
  • Work according to safe food handling standards.
  • Provide cost estimate for menu and supply purchases.
  • Identify additional staff, supply, and appliances for large scale events.
  • Oversee the quality of the kitchen.
  • Assist with planning expenditures with staff.
  • Advise regarding maintenance of all kitchen appliances.
  • Perform security and safety duties and health policies and procedures.

Knowledge and skill requirements  

  • At least 5 years of experience as a Chef.
  • Excellent understanding of food safety regulations and practices.
  • Ability to create and execute menus, interest in culinary trends.
  • Experience with working in a diplomatic environment is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Skills to manage the additional kitchen staff.
  • Ability to work independent and as part of a team.
  • Affinity with sustainability.
  • Commitment to safety and security policies.
  • Good command of English and communication skills.

Level of education/additinal training and knowledge

  • Culinary education and/or at least 5 years of experience in a similar role
  •  Training in health and safety standards
  • Additional training, knowledge or experience is a plus

Employment conditions

This position is full-time, 40 hours, for an initial period of 12 months as a local hired employee with a probationary period of 1 month with an indicative monthly gross salary: $ 5,985.00.

 401K Plan is offered. Health/Dental/Vision is provided on a 72%-28% Employer-Employee basis.

The Chef mainly works from the residence and is part of our residence staff. Other locations include, when the schedule allows, the residence of our Deputy Ambassador and our Embassy.

The Chef is accountable to the operational manager for the performance of the duties, ensuring high-quality food standards and adherence to company policies.

The Chef has a high integrity profile due to working in a high-level environment. The Chef also commits to delivering a high standard of hospitality service. Given the type of work, non-standard working hours are applicable and might include the weekends. An overtime allowance according to LSR/PUW is granted for the hours beyond the working hours.

Who we are 

The Netherlands Embassy in Washington D.C. represents the affairs of the Government of the Netherlands in the United States of America. A total of around 100 employees (multi-cultural) work at the Embassy, our residence staff consist of 3 full-time employees. The residence is located at 2347 S Street NW, Washington D.C. 

Our residence staff is part of our department of operational affairs.
