Dutch Tulip Days 2025 Celebrates 80 Years of Freedom to Mark the End of World War II
(Washington, D.C.) — This year, as the world marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Dutch Tulip Days at the residence of Ambassador Birgitta Tazelaar will recognize this milestone with four days of award presentations, luncheons, seminars, and receptions in rooms decorated with thousands of tulips and cut flowers.
World War II produced remarkable stories of endurance, defiance, and gratitude. Each public room of the residence will illustrate this legacy as Dutch Tulip Days marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the war. Upon entering the residence, visitors will see a display of tulips in red, white, and blue along the grand staircase, bracketed by archival photos of Dutch people celebrating liberation.
The dining room will recognize the endurance of Anne Frank, who transformed the world with her book, “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.” The living room will highlight the defiance of American icon, Rosie the Riveter. The library will display hundreds of white tulips to represent the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, where 8,288 Americans who fought and died during WWII are buried. Every grave is adopted by a Dutch family who tends each grave with a spirit of gratitude in honor of American bravery and sacrifice.
In addition to attending the press preview, the media is invited to cover:
- Anne Frank Award for Human Dignity and Tolerance -- On March 25 at 5 p.m., Dr. Irene Butter, a child Holocaust survivor, educator and peace activist, will receive the Anne Frank Award for Human Dignity and Tolerance. Dr. Butter and Anne Frank lived in the same neighborhood in Amsterdam and were friends as children. Dr. Kathrin Meyer, the outgoing Secretary General of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, will receive the Anne Frank Special Recognition Award.
- A Tulip for Rosie -- On March 27 at 2:30 p.m., Ambassador Tazelaar will christen a tulip in honor of Rosie the Riveter. Women from Maryland and Virginia who worked as “Rosies” will attend and be available to speak to media.
Members of the media who would like to attend the press preview, the Anne Frank Award, or the Tulip for Rosie event must RSVP to: Was-ppc@minbuza.nl by 12 p.m. on March 21.
