The team from the Dutch consulate in San Francisco will work from Portland for three days to connect on topics such as transportation, charging technology, and sustainability.

There will be meetings with Dutch and American companies and government officials. During this week, there will also be the opportunity for Dutch nationals to renew passports in Portland.

The Netherlands, small in population but large in foreign investment in the United States, is a European hub for tech and the circular economy, but also for outdoors and apparel. Oregon exports more than $371 million worth of goods to the Netherlands, which supports more than 4,973 jobs in the state. In 2021, Dutch-US economic ties supported an estimated 955,000 American jobs.

Consul General Dirk Janssen: “The Netherlands and Portland share a passion for innovation, technology, and cycling. Nike has their European headquarters in the Netherlands, and KLM/Delta connect PDX to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Companies as Philips and Tony’s Chocolonely all feel at home in Portland. Add that almost 100,000 people in Oregon are of Dutch descent and you see why the Netherlands and the Beaver State share a strong bond. I’m looking forward to strengthening this friendship during my first visit to the Portland area.”

Consul General Janssen and his team will meet with Portland officials to discuss sustainable mobility and electrifying transportation amongst others. Afterwards, there will be a bike ride throughout the city and a visit to the Portland Art Museum, which will host Dutch design collective Polymorf in November.

The diplomatic delegation will also meet with Greater Portland Inc. and the Technology Association of Oregon, and visit Electric Island, one of the first public charging stations for heavy duty electric trucks. They’ll also meet with Rocsys, a Dutch autonomous fleet charging company in Portland.
