(Washington, D.C.) — In honor of the American icon, Rosie the Riveter, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands will christen “Tulipa Rosie the Riveter” during Dutch Tulip Days at the residence of Ambassador Birgitta Tazelaar.

Rosie the Riveter symbolizes the vital role of women during World War II. As men went off to fight, an estimated 6 million women filled factory jobs, building airplanes, tanks and ammunition.

At the ceremony, three women who were Rosies during the war will be in attendance and available to speak with media:

  • Dorothy Boggess (107), worked as a typist and correspondence clerk at the War Department in D.C.
  • Velma Long (107), worked as a clerk-typist at the Department of the Navy in D.C.
  • Susan King (101), assembled airplane wings at Eastern Aircraft Company in Baltimore.

Representatives of Rosie the Riveter organizations in the area will be present, including the American Rosie the Riveter Movement (ARM) and the American Rosie the Riveter Association (ARRA). The representative of ARRA for Maryland, Anne Marie Miller, will deliver remarks.

Dutch Tulip Days 2025 from March 25 - 28, celebrates the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. In addition to unveiling Tulipa Rosie the Riveter, a large scale floral display depicting the Rosie the Riveter image, made entirely of tulips and other flowers will also be on view during the ceremony.
